In Your Comings and Goings, Fall for September!

Labor Day signals the end to summer and the beginning of fall, or does it? There are many more sunny, summer-like, warm days to follow here in the Bay Area. We welcome Labor Day Weekend with family picnics, BBQs, fairs, bike rides, and various outings. This is a great holiday for food trucks, taquerias, cafes and outdoor vendors.

Labor Day was first recognized on September 5, 1882. It was the brainchild of Peter McGuire, a laborer in the carpentry and labor union industries. He thought of Labor Day to honor the working man and woman --- their collective and fiscal successes and contributions to the United States. Pitching his idea to the New York Central Labor Union in 1882, his idea was accepted, and the first Labor Day was born. This holiday in years past was earmarked as the “last summer hurrah” before the start of the new school year.

Grandparents Day delights those who are called grandchild huggers, refrigerator art collectors,  and spoilers of all grandkids. Grandma and Grandpa have their own special day every September 12. This “holiday” that falls on a Sunday, honors those parents of parents who bring families together nationwide. Families celebrate in a myriad of ways while honoring the unique relationship that is had between grandchild and grandparent.

Constitution Day is celebrated in the United States each September 17. Fifty immigrants from around the world each year on this day, become citizens of the United States. The National Constitution Center are hosts to those global brothers and sisters who have earned the privilege to become citizens by taking the Oath of Allegiance. A Naturalization Ceremony is an esteemed event held for those who are now called Citizen.

Constitution Day --- September 17, is an American holiday also recognized as Citizenship Day. Constitution Day refers to the exact day that the Constitution of the United States was signed by 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention. This day was September 17, 1787.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11 was held this year with special events worldwide. President Biden honored those brave men, women, children and pets who not only lost their lives on this tragic day but also those who saved lives in the Towers, on the ground and in the air. A local hero, Thomas Burnett of Pleasanton, CA., was memorialized with decorations at the corners of Tom Burnett Drive, Johnson Drive and Stoneridge Drive near where Tom was employed at the time of the attack --- Thoratec, which is now Abbott Labs.

Birthdays this month include that of Idris Elba, Sep 6. Idris is best known for his portrayal of Heimdall, in many Marvel movies such as Thor: Ragnarök, and The Avengers: Infinity War.
