Halloween’s Little Surprises

From the little ones goblin up the candy, and the older ones ghosting up some fun with a pillowcase in hand, to the adults with grave thoughts on the way to a party, this is the month of Halloween. We have unearthed some fun facts…

Candy Corn, a Halloween candy essential, was once-upon-a-time named Chicken Feed … George Renninger, employee with the Wunderle Candy Company invented candy corn in the 1880’s. Mr. Renninger first created candy corn which is made in multi-colors, in 1888. This pentagonal-shaped candy is orange, yellow and white and is made with confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup, honey, vanilla, salt and more … to name a few of the ingredients. In 2019, candy corn, while being voted worst tasting candy, it is still a popular staple for every autumn-decorated coffee table. Because corn is what was used to feed chickens, the creation was called “chicken feed.”

2. “The  night before Halloween, young children in some parts of the country hit the streets for Beggar's Night.” This event began before 1940, as a way to provide a safer way for trick or treaters to enjoy Halloween without parents having to worry about potential candy disasters.   Children are to tell a joke, perform a trick, or offer a poem, to earn their own treats. Jokes are usually droll, so parents end up stepping in for this form of entertainment.

3. Turnips --- what the first jack’ o lanterns were made of.
